When I last wrote, nearly two years ago my plan was to spend a few months working to raise money, then to spend a few months volunteering at an "animal rescue" type organization in some exotic (i.e. far away) locale for a few months, while contemplating possible career choices and possible continuation of higher education. Considering how it took me three months to manage to get a part time job when returning home from Toledo, I probably shouldn't have been surprised that it has taken me almost two years to get to this point: my next adventure.
My plans have changed considerably due to the now-obvious flaw that such a plan would require far more money than I am capable of earning due to the fact that I can only find minimum wage jobs (or factory work which is more mentally damaging than I am willing to repeat at this point in my life).
However, the exciting news is I have in fact managed to work my way to another adventure. By the end of this month I am moving out of Not-New-York-City, New York to move to South Korea.
Yup. I accepted a job offer teaching English in an elementary school 5 days ago and I will be moving there as soon as I get my ass in gear and get everything taken care of. Also I need to wait for my visa, but details. I'm tempted to call the whole experience akin to a whirlwind, but I think it's more like an airport - hurry up and wait. Perhaps it's the opposite. I spent the last bit of last year taking an online TEFL (teaching english as a foreign language) course that does not leave me feeling 100% ready to jump into a classroom and take charge, and this winter has been full of getting paperwork for a visa ready and applying to job openings.
Then in the space of 24 hours I got an email from my recruiter about a response to an application requesting an interview, had an interview (the shortest interview of my life!), and had a contract in my email to accept or reject. I put in my two weeks at work that day and then had to convince a few more skeptical friends that this was not an elaborate April Fools Day joke that I planned out despite never having had an interest in the "holiday" for the past 22 times I was alive when it came around. Now I'm trying to convince myself that this isn't an elaborate fantasy my brain has concocted to make me able to pretend my life isn't that of a 23 year old living with her parents and older brother working a part time minimum wage job in retail. I do that so often that apparently I don't believe it when it's real.
Anyway, I will be attempting to start blogging now that I will actually have something interesting to blog about. I imagine transitioning from retail to teaching and from the US to South Korea will give me at least a little to write about.
GO YOU!
